Why a porch roof can leak when the main roof looks sound

The porch may shed water differently
A porch is often an addition or a lower roof attached to the house. Its slope can be shallower than the main roof, and water leaving a higher slope may reach it before draining to the edge. The covering needs to suit that arrangement.
Shingles shed water through their overlaps. They are not a waterproof sheet that can be laid at any slope. If the porch pitch is outside a product’s permitted application, changing a few shingles does not resolve the underlying mismatch. A compatible low-slope system or a properly designed roof change becomes part of the discussion.
That does not mean every porch roof is wrong. It means the inspection needs to assess the porch as its own roof section, including what arrives from above and where the water leaves.
The wall connection has a separate job
The joint where a porch roof meets a wall needs flashing that directs water out over the covering. If siding, trim or an old repair interrupts that overlap, rain can pass behind the connection and reach the ceiling below.
Surface sealant may temporarily hide the gap without rebuilding the water path. A lasting repair can require lifting roofing, working behind adjacent material and separating any siding or masonry repairs from the roofing scope.
How the repair scope becomes clear
The useful repair boundary is the place where new work can connect to sound material. On a porch, that may include the wall connection, the lower covering and the transition from a higher slope. If the deck has deteriorated around a leak, that base needs attention too.
